2004 North American
Agricultural Study Tour

Notes from the field
Contributions by Nigel Wilhelm, Zoe Fulwood and
Bill Crabtree

Explanatory Notes:

  • $ in text refers to US or Canadian currency, depending on the country visited, unless specified.

  • The $A at the time of the tour was 71-73 US cents.

  • From the 28th July to the 1st August we rested in LA, saw Los Vegas and the Grand Canyon.

  • CRP refers to the Conservation Reserve Program (subsidies).

  • 5 bags/acre of wheat = 15 bushels/acre = 1.0 t/ha.

  • 10 inches of average snow = 1 inch of rainfall.

 Acknowledgements from Bill Crabtree

  • To the many wonderful people that hosted us and spent time with us - a big thank you.

  • Zoe Fulwood for diligently coordinating the accommodation and taking many great notes of what we learnt and inserting them into Nigel’s text.

  • Dr Nigel Wilhelm for taking copious and accurate technical notes for us all.

  • Maureen Dickson for researching our travel plans thoroughly and creating the opportunities for the ladies activities. Apologies to Maureen and other for not being able to realize many of these due to time and travel logistics.

  • Bec Ifould (and your helpers) for her many thoughtful suggestions and for organizing the gifts to speakers and for those of us who organized the trip – you are so thoughtful!

  • Gavin and Jodie Beeck for helping us to navigate and for the production of the final CD.

  • Paul Simmons for coordinating the fines officers and the esky at the back of the bus.

  • Jock Anderson for your help with everyone with their photos and their laptops.
